St Moritz and Samedan

The highest commercial airfield in Europe

A mountain-qualified operator roster is mandatory. Runway 21 at 5,600 feet elevation concentrates the approach.

Samedan sits at 5,600 feet elevation in the Engadin valley and is the highest commercial airfield in Europe. The runway itself is short by business-aviation standards, and every operator flying into LSZS carries a mountain-airfield endorsement and route-specific training. The standard approach profile is flown visually down the valley from the north-east, with a rapid terrain-constrained descent. Only certain aircraft types are cleared, with a typical cut-off at the Challenger 605 and Falcon 900 for the largest metal; the majority of traffic is Citation XLS+, Latitude, CJ4, or Phenom 300E. From Samedan, St Moritz is a fifteen-minute ground transfer. We recommend arrivals no later than 15:00 local in January and February to retain the margin for mountain-weather reroutes into Zurich if required.
